These words—written by Lorraine Kember—exemplify her passion to reach out to others. From the moment she begins to speak she opens her heart to her audience. Hers is a true story of love, courage and the strength of the human spirit and those who are privileged to hear her story cannot come away without being deeply moved and inspired.

Lorraine began her speaking career in 2004, following the publication of her book ‘Lean on Me’ Cancer through a Carer’s Eyes; an inspirational true account of her husband’s courageous battle with cancer and of her emotional journey as she cares for him and comes to terms with the inevitability of his death.

Through her self designed and managed websites, Lorraine’s book has gained global recognition resulting in several invitations to speak at conferences both Nationally and Internationally, including the Global Asbestos Congress 2004, held in Tokyo Japan.

Speaking from personal experience Lorraine’s unique style of delivery is a combination of insight and discussion into the practical and emotional issues faced by carer’s along with reflection of her own caring journey through readings of her emotive poetry.

Testimonials and Booking

Phil Stanwell – Volunteer Services Co-ordinator, Silver Chain.  July 2007

Lorraine Kember’s business card describes her as Author/Inspirational and Motivational Speaker.  Having heard Lorraine in 2004 at the launch of her wonderful book ‘Lean on Me – the emotional journey of the carer’, I already knew that Lorraine could write a fine book, and had also penned some wonderful poetry.

Now we can add ‘Inspirational Speaker’ to that portfolio.  As the Co-ordinator of the Silver Chain Hospice Volunteer service, my colleague from Palliative Care Unit, Hollywood Private Hospital and I engaged Lorraine’s services as a presenter at a recent education forum for over 60 volunteers.

Her presentation was one of the day’s highlights, deeply moving and thought provoking to all present.  We not only applaud Lorraine’s personal strength and courage, but commend her natural and unaffected style of presentation, personal warmth and ability to mingle with an audience.  " Thank you Lorraine.”

Hon Keith Wilson
Immediate past Chair of the Mental Health Council of Australia and
Immediate past president of the WA Association for Mental Health

On 16th and 17th November, 2006 I acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the 2nd WA Transcultural Mental Health Conference in Perth.

Lorraine was one of the 5 keynote presenters 3 of who were international and national experts from high profile clinical, academic and research backgrounds.

Lorraine's presentation entitled "Caring for Loved Ones with Terminal Illness – ‘The Emotional Journey of the Carer’ was received by a rapt audience with acclaim. As one of many carers of family members with chronically disabling mental illness who were present, I was deeply impressed by her ability to powerfully and sensitively communicate her own life experience learning’s of her carer's journey so that it resonated so closely with my own.

It is my firm view that Lorraine's approach which is a highly creative blend of her own poetic reflection and a smooth professional presentation skills would provide a telling contribution to any audience of family carers and health professionals in any sphere of health care training and support.

"Lorraine, thank you for presenting at our annual seminar for First Aid Trainers and Volunteer Ambulance Officer Trainers.  Your presentation was both compelling and encouraging. I'm sure many of the trainers found your personal account of grief and caring for a loved one to be most inspiring".

Learn Now; Live Well; Train the Trainer
Palliative Care – Hollywood Hospital Nedlands Perth WA

I asked Lorraine to be involved as a guest speaker for our program Learn Now Live Well Train the Trainer. The course focused on teaching health care professionals how to support and educate families of palliative care patients.  Lorraine was able to help our participants really understand how it felt to look after someone at home who was dying, the importance of symptom management and the value of palliative care to families.  Lorraine read a selection of her poems and these proved to be an eloquent and beautiful way to describe a carer’s journey.

I cannot praise Lorraine enough; she has a clear way of communicating her journey with such love and compassion it truly touched all of our hearts.
