In 1999, Lorraine’s husband was diagnosed with terminal Mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer) and given a prognosis of 3 to 9 months. Although struggling with her own grief, Lorraine’s main concern was for her husband and the pain he might suffer. Determined to help him, she sought knowledge about pain and ways by which it could be controlled and came to realize that although she could not stop her husband from dying – she could help him to live.

Lorraine’s husband survived for two years, during which she cared for him at home. Her ceaseless efforts to ease his pain and support him as he travelled to the end of his life resulted in him attaining a quality of life few thought possible considering the nature of his disease. His brave fight with cancer came to an end in December 2001 – he was 54 years old.

Since writing her book “Lean on Me: Cancer through a Carer’s Eyes" Lorraine is regularly invited to speak to other Carer’s as well as Professional bodies and the general public about the importance of Pain Management and Symptom Control to Quality of Life. She also speaks to Grief Support Groups about coping with Anticipatory Grief, Moving through Grief after Loss and finding the strength to move on with your life.
